Trust, But Verify!  -  Mercury Retrograde in Virgo and the Astrology of August 2024*

Growing up, the X-Files was one of my favourite shows. Despite reacting to the paranormal storylines with a mixture of fear and aversion, I was reminded of the poster hanging in FBI agent Fox Mulder’s basement office. “Trust no one,” it read — a slightly ominous phrase, but one that seemed apropos for many of August’s astrological energies.

Now, bear with me, because this isn’t some thinly veiled attempt at shock-jock celestial interpretation. Rather, in an age of rampant conspiracy theories and relentless fake news, we can all benefit from a reminder that everyone — even once-trusted mainstream media sources — seems to have an angle nowadays. Healthy skepticism could help us navigate the heady days of August, particularly as the messenger of the gods, Mercury, turns retrograde in Virgo (Aug. 5–28). Although we’re seasoned pros when it comes to handling the little grey planet’s thrice-annual backstroke, its dip from Virgo to Leo reminds us not to shirk personal due diligence just because we’re apt to trust the big personality making the pronouncement.

Throughout much of August, an applying Jupiter-Saturn conjunction could cast another disconcerting shadow. The gods of bounty and boundaries square off, inviting an uncomfortable tension between excess data and our ability to interpret the information intuitively. Although the aspect perfects on Aug. 19, its lingering effects will likely see us struggle to separate fact from fiction for most of the month. Take care under these two celestial signatures to interrogate your sources: “Trust, but verify,” as Ronald Reagan might say.

All is not doom and gloom, however, considering the luscious Leo New Moon (Aug. 4), which invites us to set new intentions for shining brightly in our lives. Creative self-expression, courage and compassion all unite in a powerful moment for recalibrating our trajectory and profiling our personal desires. A mildly supportive sextile from Mars in Gemini can help us make sense of our situation, though a wide quincunx to Saturn in Pisces could have us struggle to feel our way through this lunation. Relationships could also be profiled as Venus hovers on the last degree of warm and trusting Leo. Its move into fault-finding Virgo (Aug. 5) could see the scales fall from our eyes when it comes to friends and lovers.

A Mercury-Venus conjunction (Aug. 7) could have us revisiting communications in a relationship. Perhaps we were far too soft and a bit too unguarded with our hearts? Maybe we’ve longed to say something, but timing was never on our side? As retrograde Mercury compels us to cast a critical gaze over certain areas of our lives, matters of the heart could warrant a second look, but additional perspective could come as Mercury slips back into Leo (Aug. 14), altering our perspectives on a situation.

Mars and Jupiter meet up in a challenging conjunction that could see big, bold ideas cut off at the knees (Aug. 14). While martial bravado likely compels us to act, a square from retrograde Saturn could present familiar obstacles previously encountered, hampering our chances for success. All is not lost, however, as Sol and Mercury meet up in a powerful union (Aug. 18), initiating a promising new three-month cycle. Mercury in the heart of the lion bodes well for us to embrace our personal power and step confidently into new projects, initiatives and creative ventures for the next three months.

The Aquarius Full Moon may shake-up our personal life as it squares Uranus (Aug. 19). The modern ruler of the sign heightens tensions, while also holding the key to our liberation from certain emotional fetters. Back in February, the Aquarius New Moon had a similar aspectual signature, squaring Uranus within one degree and sextiling the North Node in Aries. A fated window of opportunity that required catalytic action on our part could have materialized. Meanwhile, a trine from Venus in practical Capricorn likely softened Uranus’s harder edges, tamping down wild desires to rock the boat and undermine the status quo. While some of us may have yearned to buck convention in the hopes of recalibrating our longer-term trajectory, Venus likely emphasized material security and kept us on a more sober path that overrode any actions we could come to regret. By contrast, this August Full Moon has a combust Mercury, not only impairing any revisionary exercises, but potentially concealing necessary information to invite a fully scoped decision. The square to Uranus will invariably cause upset, so tread lightly lest you come to regret any rash changes you may be driven to make.

As the Sun slips into scrutinizing Virgo, our life path may benefit from a pre-equinoctial pause (Aug. 22). Stock-taking will be aided by the waning days of Mercury on its revisionary path. Before resuming any projects in abeyance under the celestial threat of delays and derailments, assessing the state of affairs towards the close of the month could offer innumerable benefits, especially if the Aquarius Full Moon leaves us picking up any pieces. Use the six days before Mercury returns to direct motion to cast a wide gaze over the course of events in August, assess new information acquired, and make rational calculations as you head into the month of September.

The month closes on Venus’s return to empowerment in Libra (Aug. 29). This is the signature of rebalancing and repair as we patch up any relationship turmoil and return to cerebral pleasures in our lives. As the cosmic diplomat and celestial charmer comes home, we may welcome the return of equilibrium and a certain lightness in our lives.
